Cuba: Higher Education Centers Turn 35
Having produced more than one million graduates since 1959, Cuba's network of higher education centers turns 35, with the objective of raising quality in that sector.
With 67 universities throughout the country, the network emerged on July 19, 1976 to satisfy the demand for professionals with a high level of social commitment.
Instead of focusing on high enrollment levels such as in the 2007-2008 academic year, when it was for 743,000 students in all areas of study, the objective of the Cuban university is to raise the quality of education.
According to the Ministry of Higher Education, Cuba expects to close 2011 with 1.18 million graduates since the triumph of the Revolution, in January 1, 1959.
The figure will be possible after the graduation this month of some 104,900 professionals, most of them regular full-time students.
The interest of those universities goes beyond numbers, because, according to Minister Miguel Diaz-Canel, the idea is to train the competent and revolutionary professionals the country needs.
