Cuba FM at UN for Blockade Debate

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez arrived in New York Tuesday, to attend the UN General Assembly's debate Wednesday on the US blockade against Cuba.

The UN forum will analyze a report entitled Need to end the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, and is expected to adopt a related resolution.

It will be the 18th consecutive year that the UN General Assembly approves a resolution condemning the nearly 50-year-old blockade imposed by Washington on Cuba.

A month ago at the UN, about 30 presidents condemned that practice, and Rodriguez reiterated the blockade remains intact, and is an act of unilateral aggression that must be brought to an end.

He also warned the US government keeps ignoring the world call for the lifting of the blockade, and explained the measures recently announced by the White House are a positive step, but extremely limited and insufficient.

The minister reiterated Cuba's willingness to normalize relations with the US, and hold a respectful dialogue between peers, "without damaging our independence and self-determination."

The US blockade has been increasingly condemned by UN members since 1991, and last year 185 countries supported the denunciation, the highest number ever.
