Cuba and Ecuador Working Together as Result of Health Accords

Cuba is working today with Ecuador on the development and production of biological controllers, a sector where agreements are being established for the elimination of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

The biological vector control program of the Labiofam business group, has made successful advances in Ecuador since last year, in the effort to control these two highly recurrent diseases, especially in coastal areas, Yosbani Pupo, Production Director at Labiofam told Prensa Latina.

He noted that this program began to be developed in seven cities of five coastal provinces of this South American nation. "We currently have 80 Labiofam specialists and 1,300 local workers assisting almost 350,000 homes," he said.

The plan for the eradication of these vectors is being carried out with Bactivec. It is a larvicide harmless to humans and the environment, with more than 30 years of use in Cuba and first world countries, the official said.

He added that the vector is being controlled 100 percent with this product.

The program will increase its efficiency today, as transportation of specialists and products improves, to reach more homes and remote places, he said.

Pupo said that feasibility studies are being conducted to build a Bactivec producing plant in Ecuador, to also produce Biotrat and other products, such as biofertilizers, bio-stimulants and bioplagicides, using Cuban technology, to be transferred as part of the collaboration between the two nations.
