Colombian Gov't Urges Citizen Participation in Peace Talks
The head of the government delegation to the peace talks in Colombia, Humberto de la Calle, found that the contribution of Colombians is a key element to end the armed conflict.
"People's involvement is elemental for the government and therefore different methods are provided so they can express themselve", said the former Vice President just before traveling to Cuba, where talks resumed with Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP).
De la Calle talked about the results of the first round of talks, which had a five-day break in their six-point agenda, which includes agricultural issues, political participation, the end of the conflict, drug trafficking and victims assistance, as well as mechanisms of verification and countersignature of the agreement.
First, a forum on the land issue is been prepared, scheduled from 17 to 19 December in Bogota where we hope to place specific proposals on the table, he said.
According to a joint statement, the government and the FARC-EP requested the support of the United Nations in Colombia and Center of Thought and Monitoring of the Peace Dialogue at the National University to process and receive the conclusions of the meeting on January 8.
"We will also receive some expert with the objective of working in line with concrete realities in a process that has to be serious, realistic, not rhetorical, effective, that has to work on solutions in real life" he said.
De la Calle stated the purpose of the talks with Cuba and Norway as guarantors is the end of the conflict, with an unarmed FARC included in the political life and full democratic guarantees.
