Chinese President in Cuba for Official Visit

Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived on Monday evening in Havana for a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.

The distinguished visitor was met at the Jose Marti International Airport by First VP Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque, and Fernando Remirez de Estenoz, head of the Foreign Relations Department at the Central Committee of Cuba's Communist Party.

Also present was China's Ambassador in Havana, Zhao Rongxian, and a throng of Chinese residents and students of the Asian nation in Cuba.

"For half a century, the Cuban people have accomplished great successes in safeguarding state sovereignty, national economic development and a better quality of life," Hu said in a statement. "We sincerely hope that the Cuban people continue to make new advances in building socialism," the note added.

This visit reflects the excellent relations between the Cuban and Chinese governments and Communist parties and the bonds of friendship between the peoples of both countries.

During his stay in Cuba, Hu Jintao will hold official talks with Raul Castro and will visit places of social and economic interest.

This is Hu Jintao’s third trip to Cuba. His first visit was in 1997, when he was a member of the Permanent Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of China’s Communist Party. He then visited the Caribbean nation as head of the Chinese nation in 2004, when he signed 16 agreements with the leader of the Cuban Revolution and then President Fidel Castro.
