Che 's Daughter Demands Freedom for the Cuban Five
At the end of her visit to Argentina in support of the Cuban humanitarian missions, Dr. Aleida Guevara March, daughter of legendary guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara, demanded freedom for three Cuban fighters against terrorism still incarcerated in the United States.
She referred to Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramón Labañino, who are in prison for more than 16 years, confining the United Nations commission to evaluate detentions described as arbitrary and unfair.
The three are part of a group that in the international campaigns for their release is known as The Five, which comprises also René González and Fernando González who were released after serving their sentences.
In a ceremony at the Armenian Cultural Union of Buenos Aires, her last public activity in the country, Guevara March called the audience to support the demand for the immediate release of Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio.
She noted that if Gerardo is not released only his remains will return to Cuba because he was sentenced to two life sentences plus 15 years.
The doctor said that the process in Miami was illegal from the start because the principle of a fair and impartial trial was not respected.
She noted that there is evidence that the American government paid large sums of money to journalists to incite a media campaign and create an anti-Cuban febrile atmosphere surrounding the process to justify the convictions.
She also challenged the main charge of alleged espionage since they disregarded even testimonies of officers from the United States Intelligence who said the Five did not affect at all the security of that country.
During her stay in Argentina, the pediatrician unveiled the foundation plaque of what will be the School Hospital of Ophthalmology Dr. Ernesto Che Guevara, in the city of Córdoba, which will expand the Operación Milagro (Operation Miracle) eye program.
Thanks to this humanitarian initiative, 48,000 Argentines have been surgically operated for free since 2005.
