Campaign to Free Cuban 5 Reaches Vallegrande
The campaign undertaken on July by three young American doctors for the release of Cuban five antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States, will arrive in today the Bolivian region of Vallegrande.
The three doctors, graduates of the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba, have toured many countries of the region on motorcycles and, after visiting La Higuera to honor Argentine-Cuban Commander Ernesto Guevara, returned to Vallegrande, where the remains of the guerrilla rested for three decades.
Argentines Dario Valenzuela and Milko Figueroa, and Bolivian Juan Tola, are part of the project "Sembrando caminos con los Cinco" (Sowing paths with the Five), aimed at fighting for the freedom of the Cuban Five (Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez and Fernando Gonzalez), imprisoned for over 14 years.
At the museum in La Higuera yesterday, at the site of the old schoolhouse, the three doctors left a jacket demanding of the release of the Cuban Five, as they are known internationally, faithful to the custom of visitors to leave some clothes in remembrance of Che's presence there.
The three doctors departed in July from Venezuela headed for the Argentinian Patagonia region early next year, after visiting other Bolivian and Uruguayan departments.
The intention of their tour of South America is to tell the world about the biased trial held in the United States against the Five, after which they were sentenced in 2001 to prison terms ranging from 15 years to two life terms plus 15 years.
