Bolivarian Candidates Win Majority of State Governments in Venezuelan Local Elections

Candidates of the Bolivarian government in Venezuela won most of the gubernatorial posts during local elections held on Sunday in this South American nation with an unprecedented turnout to polling stations.

According to Granma news daily, the opposition won only three states and the Capital District during a vote that went smoothly and that was attended by 65.45% of the electorate.

The candidates of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) won in the states of Yaracuy, Delta Amacuro, Vargas, Apure, Aragua, Barinas, Bolivar, Cojedes, Falcon, Guarico, Lara, Merida, Monagas, Portuguesa, Trujillo, Sucre, Anzoategui and in the municipality of Libertador de Caracas.

The Capital District as well as the states of Zulia, Miranda and Nueva Esparta went to the hands of the opposition.

According to figures given by the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, results were not clear in the states of Carabobo and Tachira.

Before the elections, the opposition was hoping to win, at least, 14 state governments, a figure that progressively decreased as the electoral process reached its climax on Sunday.

PSUV Vice President Alberto Muller said that the ruling party will dominate the national geopolitical map, with a clear lead over their rivals in most of the cases.
