- He writes a letter to Melba Hernández in which he instructs her about steps to be taken to fight against the Batista dictatorship: "We have to coordinate the work between our people both here and abroad (...) Any coordination effort coming from other factors must be considered with extreme care, just in case they are simply trying to use our name ... Under no circumstance shall we allow anyone to look down to us; we must never reach any agreement but on firm, clear grounds of probable and beneficial benefits for Cuba. Otherwise it is preferable to walk alone and keep the flag high until these formidable boys who are imprisoned are free ... "
