New surgical modalities useful for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma in Cuba were discussed today in an international conference of ophthalmology.

"There is an atmosphere of updating and sharing of experiences that will lead to improvements for patients", told Prensa Latina Dr. Ibrahim Piloto, coordinator of the symposium.

"All issues presented are based on thematic lines of a working strategy that links a group of professionals within ophthalmology related to glaucoma," he added.

Regarding treatment of this evil, the classical methods have yielded to the introduction of new surgical and anatomical techniques which are the future of surgery for this disease, according to the specialist.

During the symposium, delegates also discussed the results of research on cataract, retina-vitreous, cornea, low vision, refractive surgery, inflammatory diseases and pediatric ophthalmology.

The issues related to eye bank, eye contact lenses, prevention of blindness, ocular tumors and ophthalmic nursing are also discussed during the event.
