Mother of One of Cuban 5 Highlights Visit to Dom Rep

Mirta Rodriguez, mother of one of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States 14 years ago, described very fruitful and pleasant the one-week visit she will conclude today to the Dominican Republic.

I'm pleased of so much solidarity with the cause of my son, Antonio Guerrero, and that of Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, the over 80-year-old women told Prensa Latina.

She said she felt good among many friends, and the media with which she interacted were friendly and understanding when to exhibit "a case worthy the attention of all."

These days, full of experiences, represent other efforts for the release of our sons, who are victims of a great injustice, as they only defended us from further terrorist actions, Rodriguez said.

The Five, as they are universally known, were detained on September 12, 1998 while monitoring violent actions by anti-Cuban groups based in south Florida.

After a biased and rigged trial, according to recognized jurists worldwide, they were condemned to harsh sentences ranging from two life terms plus 15 years in prison.

Rene Gonzalez already completed his prison term on October 7, 2011, and now complies with three years of supervised release on U.S. soil.

During her stay in Dominican Republic, Mirtha Rodriguez attended a mass for the Five, and visited some cities within the country, including Bani, birthplace of famous patriot Maximo Gomez. He had an outstanding participation in the Cuban independence struggles.

She also talked at length with members of the Dominican Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba, and was received yesterday by legislators and senators at the Congress headquarter.
