WFTU Sends Letter to The Cuban Five
The World Federation of Trade Unions, in international conference held at the European Parliament headquarters, decided to address a letter to the Five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unfairly jailed in the United States.
Participants in the forum renewed their support and solidarity to the cause of The Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide, on the 13th year of their unjust imprisonment.
Together with the discussions on the Imperialist intervention in North Africa and the Middle East, the WFTU described as brothers Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez.
On behalf of millions of affiliates representing numerous countries and organizations, we wish to convey our message of support amid the absurdly prolonged injustice, reads the letter.
It also says that since the case of The Cuban Five became public news, the WFTU has joined the battle for their release in every international venue. "For over 50 years,we have been familiar with the hostility of the United States and its allies," it stresses.
The WFTU also reminds of Washington's complicity, cover up and support to terrorist groups that plan violent actions against the Island from US territory, including notorius Luis Posada Carriles, among others.
"We know you risked your lives to protect more than 11 million Cubans and prevent the death of innocents. You have felt in your own flesh the impotence and fury of imperialism in failing to destroy the Cuban Revolution," stressed the text.
The WFTU members recalled that Gerardo, Fernando, Ramon, Antonio and Rene have been victims of arbitrary detention, arrest, isolation and inhuman treatment along these 13 years behind bars.
"However, their examples of dignity and courage became at once universal symbols of combat and resistance amid daily growing international solidarity," they added.
"We hope that truth and justice will sooner than later see the light and you will be free, together with your loved ones and your people. We promise we will never give up on you," concludes the WFTU message.
The Cuban Five were arrested on September 12, 1998 and in dirty trial in 2001 were given harsh prison sentences ranging from 15 years to double life for warning their country against violent actions planned by terrorist groups based in US territory.
