Cuba-Venezuela Submarine Cable will be Ready in July 2011
The submarine optical fiber cable between Cuba, Venezuela and Jamaica will be ready in July 2011, said the Cuban Vice Minister of Computing and Communications, Alberto Rodríguez.
This project will cover a distance of 3,318 miles, and will strengthen national sovereignty and security, Rodriguez said while inaugurating the First Business Forum Cuba-Azerbaijan in the field of new technologies.
The cable will provide more quality in the info-communications services and more favorable conditions will be created to face future developments.
Rodriguez explained that the cable will be achieved through integration projects with the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA), an initiative founded by Caracas and Havana in 2004.
At a cost of $70 million, it will have a life span of 25 years and the investment will be recovered in standard periods, said Waldo Reboredo, vice president of Telecommunications Gran Caribe SA, the joint venture that will manage the operation.
The existence of the cable will allow Cuba to multiply by three thousand times the current speed transmission of data, images and voice, and the countries involved will benefit in terms of social exchange.
