Cuba Closes with Gold Youth Olympic Games Singapore 2010
With a gold medal in men's volleyball, Cuba closed its participation at the 1st Youth Olympic Games Singapore 2010, in which it finished fifth among 205 countries represented in the event.
Led by its star player Wilfredo Leon, the Cuban team beat Argentina 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-20) at the final match of the volleyball tournament.
It was the ninth gold medal for Cuba whose athletes also won three silver and two bronze titles in the Games that closed Thursday, to lead the pack of American countries, including the U.S.A. (4-9-9) and Canada (3-1-8) that finished 13th and 18th respectively.
Brazil (2-3-2) and Colombia (2-3-0) were the other two best Latin American nations. Bolivia won the gold in men's football and Chile in the ladies' competition.
China topped the table of medals by country with 30 gold, 16 silver and five bronze to lead the Games ahead of Russia (19-15-11) and South Korea (11-5-4). Ukraine placed fourth with 10-14-33.
In all 58 nations won gold medals, while 98 racked up at least one medal among the 205 Olympic Committees represented in the Games.
