Ecuador Readies for Solidarity Meeting
The 15th National Meeting of the Movement of Friendship and Solidarity with Cuba will be held in Loja, Ecuador, on June 5th.
The one-day gathering is expected to be attended by hundreds of delegates from all the country's provinces.
Loja city, the capital of Loja province, is located in the country's southermost tip, bordering Peru, at 6,758 feet over sea level and 398 miles from Quito, the capital; therefore, dozens of buses from the different provinces will be needed for the mobilization.
The program includes the registration of delegates, a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of national hero Eloy Alfaro and a plenary session where a delegate from the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) is expected to speak.
The welcoming speech will be given by a Loja official and later participants will divide into four commissions: The US Blockade against Cuba, the Media Campaign against the Island, The Five Anti-Terrorist Cuban Fighters Held in US Prisons and Youth Solidarity.
Current President of the Ecuadorian Coordinating Office of Solidarity with Cuba, Fidel Chiriboga, will read a main report before the commission debates.
Guidelines agreed during this meeting will cover the period 2010-2012, scheduled to start on October 24th with a large celebration on occasion of the 120th anniversary of the first meeting between Eloy Alfaro and Jose Marti in New York.
In the afternoon of June 5th, the delegates are scheduled to march from the Loja City Coliseum to Independence Square, where a cultural night of solidarity with the Cuban people will be staged.
