Cuban Five Should Be Released

Representatives of some 50 countries demanded in the eastern Cuban province of Camaguey the immediate release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters that have been unfairly imprisoned in the United States for almost 12 years.

Participants in the "Walk along the Major General's Route" signed a letter addressed to US President Barack Obama with that objective, Granma newspaper reported on Monday.

The march on Sunday along over 6.2 miles commemorated the fall in combat of Cuban patriot Ignacio Agramonte, who was killed on May 11, 1873, and reached the rank of General Major.

"To honor Agramonte makes us feel very proud of what his ideas and revolutionary work, and his love for his wife Amalia Simoni and his homeland represent," Irma Gonzales, older daughter of Rene Gonzalez, one the Cuban Five, stated.

Rene, along with Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero were detained on September 12, 1998, for monitoring terrorist groups responsible of violent actions against Cuba.
