Venezuela Warns UN on US Bases in Colombia

Venezuela warned the UN Security Council that establishing US military bases in Colombia is part of expansionist plans by the United States towards Latin America.

Venezuela's permanent representative to the UN Jorge Valero made this statement during a session of this authority devoted to the issue of civilians' protection in armed conflicts.

The diplomat stated that establishing seven US military bases in Colombian soil breaks peaceful coexistence among nations and creates a dangerous geo-strategic reality that could lead a continental conflict of great magnitude.

Valero also denounced that Washington aims at turning Colombia into a political, economic, cultural and military enclave for domination of the whole continent, and mentioned data of an official document of the US Air Force, dating from May, 2009.

Establishing military enclaves in that country guarantees access to the whole South America, except Cape Horn, and creates an opportunity to lead operations throughout the region, the text says.

Addressing the Security Council, Valero urged Colombian authorities to reflect and examine their internal situation, and recalled that the so-called "Colombia Plan" failed, and drug trafficking increased its influence on the country, reaching important State figures.

The Colombian government has been able to give up sovereignty, before accepting that there is an internal conflict in its country, Valero said.
