Eurodeputies Want Cuban 5 Free
Eurodeputies from different countries and the Municipal Council near Valenton, France, spoke out for the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in US jails for 11 years.
The initiative, emerged in the European Parliament (EP), was inked by leftwing deputies, the same as in Valenton, an outskirt city of Paris where most of officials belong to the French Communist Party.
Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez and Fernando Gonzalez, universally known as the Five, were detained on September 12, 1998 in Miami, and convicted and sentenced in a rigged trial in Miami to harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to double life terms.
Among EP members' demands are Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, spouses of Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, respectively, can visit their husbands in jails and receive their corresponding visa.
Also on the list is US President Barack Obama uses constitutional powers to free the Five, and apply the decision by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention adopted in May 2005, which termed unjust their imprisonments.
Parliamentarians as well as members of the Municipal Council near Valenton also requested the European Union and the French government to mediate in this affair.
Among signers of the text are Jean-Luc Melenchon (France- Vice President of the Foreign Affairs Commission), Marie-Christine Vergiat (France), and Willy Meyer (Spain- Vice President of EUROLAT).
Patrick Le Hyarick (France- Director of L Humanite), Nikolaos Chountis (Greece), Elie Hoarau (France), Gabriele Zimmer (Germany), Kyriacos Triantaphyllides (Cyprus), and Jacky Henin (France) also joined the list.
