Cuban Robles Says Bye to Championship Dream
Cuban 110-hurdle-meter sprinter Dayron Robles said good-bye to his World Championship title dream in Berlin-2009, after suffering injuries in the third semifinal heat of the competition Thursday.
Robles, Beijing-2008 Olympic Champion and world recordman, with 12.87 seconds, could not go over the first three obstacles of the race before he screamed in pain and went down with his hands on the left thigh.
The Cuban athlete, 22 years old, suffered injuries in the preliminary rounds Wednesday and classified with great difficulty to the semifinals, with 13.67.
Robles and his training coach, Santiago Antunes, announced he would be able to compete Thursday.
In his brilliant career, Robles still lacks a medal in the outdoors world championships, because he finished fourth in Osaka-2007.
This season an injury in the same place forced Robles to suspend his indoors season in February, although he was able to recover and get 10 serial victories outdoors, included the best record of the season (13.04).
