Cuban President Honors Guayasamin
Cuban President Raul Castro paid homage to the deceased Ecuadorian master painter and sculptor Oswaldo Guayasamin, whose recognition he said will grow in time.
Cuban leader visited the Capilla del Hombre or Chapel of Man in Quito, an architectonic cultural space, and laid a wreath in the Tree of Life, in whose roots rest the ashes of the painter and that of his friend the writer Jorge Enrique Adoum, in the gardens of this cultural complex.
Accompanied by Pablo, Guayasamin‚´s sun and President of Oswaldo Guayasamin Foundation, Raul Castro visited the Chapel of Man, art museum and monument designed by the famous Ecuadorian artist, located at the peak of an elevation at 9.842 feet above sea level, from which a large part of Quito closest´s volcano Pichincha can be seen.
In several places of the construction of 35,590 square feet, Raul Castro kept in respectful silence, just as if he were before a great mural painting with the phrase by Oswaldo Guayasamin: "I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a child with no feet."
Together with Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez and Havana Historian Eusebio Leal, Raul Castro remembered moments shared with Guayasamin before the 32-photo gallery, in which he appears together with Fidel Castro.
When the time came to say goodbye, the Cuban President wrote: "Dear and Unforgettable Guayasamin:
Before anything else, the embrace of your brother Fidel Castro and the Cuban people who will never forget you. In a quick tour to the Man´s Chapel, which would have been dedicated some hours, before every work done by your hands, each one with an enormous significance, we bow once more, completely sure that you will grow with your own work and with time. Your work, which is not only this famous chapel, but also what your entire work aspires, will be fulfilled in the entire continent."
