Marti was the first Cuban to introduced Vietnam and its people, culture, and heroic history of struggle against foreign invasions, to Latin America, he recalled.
Nguyen Duy Cuong, Vice President of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association, said that the presence of the monument to the Cuban national hero demonstrates Vietnamese respect for the founder of special relationships between the two peoples.
Marti fell in battle on May 19, 1895, five years after the birth on the same day of President Ho Chi Minh, something which is traditionally evoked in Hanoi and Havana.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Friendship Association, former Vietnamese scholarship students in Cuba, diplomats, and Cuban builders working in Vietnam.
