The United States is promoting the emigration of Cuban medical personnel from third countries, a matter of "brain drain" described as lethal and denounced by other affected countries and international organizations, national media said today.
Organizations such as the UN Development Program and the World Health Organization have denounced the maneuver due to its negative effects, pointed out immigration expert Ileana Sorolla in an article published in the Granma newspaper.
Sorolla, Director of the Center for International Migration Studies at the University of Havana was referring to the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program, created by the U.S. government in August 2006 during the presidency of George W. Bush, to lure Cuban trained doctors.
The project, continued by the Barack Obama administration, is a political tactic meant to discredit and impede Cuban cooperation in healthcare with friendly countries, Sorolla stated.
"It is an attempt to set up a kind of political trap for professionals with well-recognized quality in terms of their scientific skills and humanity, and who are involved in work that is highly sensitive and valuable to the general population; luring them away through propaganda, and having done so, to then hinder their continued work as professionals," said the article.
