Artists, intellectuals and scholars reiterated the demand for the release of four Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in U.S. jails and another held against his will in this country.
The writer Alice Walker, actor Danny Glover and filmmaker Saul Landau, among other U.S. personalities joined the Cuban intellectual Miguel Barnet and a group of scholars of his country, who traveled to San Francisco to participate in the 30th Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), in the claim for the return of The Five to their homeland.
These men pay for their unconditional love to their people, for seeking information that they knew could save many lives, Glover said, referring to the case of The Five, who infiltrated right-wing groups to learn about terrorist plans against Cuba.
Meanwhile, Walker demanded the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, and the return to his homeland of Rene Gonzalez, who has already served his sentence, but is forced to remain on U.S. soil.
The filmmaker Landau defended the innocence of the Cuban Five and called for their release and to strengthen efforts to achieve their final return to Cuba.
Particularly emotional was the moment of the act were they received phone calls from Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, who reaffirmed the determination to stand firm in defense of their positions to Cuba as long as necessary.
During the event, organized by the U.S. National Committee to Free the Five, led by Gloria La Riva, was also presented the book Guerrillero del Alba, which includes the trajectory of Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution.
