Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon called on the members of the National Association of Cuban Lawyers (UNJC) to intensify efforts for the prompt return home of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in U.S. prisons.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 7th Congress of the UNJC, held at Havana's Conference Center, Alarcon stated that the Five, as they are known internationally, would return home if all jurists cooperate with the spirit and will that many colleagues have shown through the history of this nation.
Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez are currently serving harsh sentences for reporting on the plans of violent actions against Cuba by terrorist groups based on U.S. territory.
If we want to fulfill our duty at present, we have to be capable of working hard in this sense without any rethoric, Alarcon said.
We should use the so-called new information technologies, mainly to reach the U.S. people, the Assembly president suggested.
Previously, in a statement, participants in the event repudiated the violation of basic and elementary principles of justice in the trial of the Five, such as the violation of the due legal process, and the right to a fair trial with an unbiased jury, which was pressured by the U.S. administration.
The UNJC called on judges, lawyers and jurists' organizations in general to denounce such an injustice, reinforced by the silence of major information monopolies that hide the truth about the case.
