Leaders from Peru's political and social organizations asked the South American and Arab heads of State and Government gathered in this capital today to intercede for the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States.
In a message distributed to the participants in the 3rd Summit of South America and the Arab Countries (ASPA), the signers call upon the leaders to intervene with the U.S. government so the Cuban Five are released.
According to the text, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Fernando Gonzalez were detained 14 years ago on American soil and condemned to illegal and unjust sentences, and must regain their freedom.
The document states that U.S. President Barack Obama has powers to redress injustice and pardon them, and calls on the participants in this forum to 'assume this cause that symbolizes the dignity of man in our time.'
The request is signed by the Peruvian Committee of Solidarity with the Five, name with which they are universally known, and youth and intellectuals, as well as Peruvian Communist Party general secretary Roberto de la Cruz, and Peru's Communist Party president Alberto Moreno.
Also on the list are the leaders of the Socialist and Socialist Revolutionary parties, the Worker-Peasant Student Front, Political and Social Coordinating Committee, Social Affirmation Movement, and other groups.
Similarly, the General Confederation of Workers, the Federation of Construction Workers, the Trade Union of Education Workers, and other unions.
The Peruvian Committee of Solidarity with the Five sent a document with detailed information about the case of antiterrorist fighters, which monitored groups planning attacks against Cuba from Florida, the United States. sc/iff/mrs
