More Than 2 Million Students in Cuban Classrooms

Cuban classrooms receive as of today more than two million students from different education levels, in the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
Executives from the Ministries of Education (MINED) and Higher Education (MES) have confirmed the adequate preparation in each school, to undertake the challenges of the new school year, in order to ensure academic quality.
According to Education Minister Ena Elsa Velazquez, that organization has enrolled more than 1,890,000 students, representing 34,000 students less than in the previous academic year, corresponding to the population decline in school age.
The universities connected with the MES begin the new school year with 155,000 students, almost a half of those enrolled at that education level in the country, Higher Education Minister Rodolfo Alarcon told reporters.
To face up the enrollment demands, both organizations have about 200,000 teachers, of them 175 000 teachers belonging to the MINED schools staff, and 25,500 to the higher education institutions, not only as full but also part-time teachers.
Discussing the preparations for the beginning of the new academic course, Velazquez said that the changes implemented in different level of the national education system will be strengthened.
Alarcon stated that this new school year is organized and conceived to comply with the Economic and Social Policy Guideline of the Draft Party Program, adopted in the 6th Congress of the Party.
Consequently, the political and ideological work in the base will be enhanced, as a first priority, in search of a greater effectiveness in the results of this work, the minister said.
