In remarks to Prensa Latina, the leader of the coalition of leftist parties and movements of the Guarani people said the Washington siege against the Caribbean island constitutes a massive attack by the U.S. Empire against human rights.
It should be noted that the country practicing subjugation against all peoples worldwide, in addition to blockading Cuba, is also usurping the territory of Guantanamo in Cuba, violating human rights with imperial impunity, he said.
Canese did not spare harsh words against the action of different U.S. governments that have maintained the blockade for more than 50 years, causing severe damage to Cuban economy.
For me, it shows disdain for peaceful coexistence in plain view of the whole world, but also the fear that peoples such as those in Cuba, should have dignity and stand against imperialism, he said.
Canese stressed his disappointment with the first administration of President Barack Obama, who not only did not have the nobility to lift the blockade, but did not even comply with his promise to close the prison at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo.
He also blamed the American arms industry, and accused it of destroying the entire planet, as Fidel Castro and other leaders of Latin America and the rest of the world have already said.
Finally, referring to the U.S. refusal to accept the global demand to cease the blockade on Cuba expressed every year at the United Nations, Canese said that this attitude is imposed by multinational corporations, but ultimately the blockade will definitively have to be lifted due to the overwhelming solidarity of all peoples with Cuba.
