Cuba's ambassador to Portugal Eduardo Gonzalez Lerner denounced the genocidal and extraterritorial nature of the prolonged economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States to his country.
In a press conference at Havana's embassy in Lisbon, Gonzalez Lerner explained the disastrous consequences of that siege of over 50 years, which he described as criminal, absurd, illegal, and morally unsustainable.
In the exchange with many Portuguese media, the diplomat said that Washington's unilateral blockade has failed to achieve its objective or break the Cuban people's decision to defend its sovereignty, independence and self-determination.
The ambassador told reporters some aspects of the draft resolution submitted to the Caribbean nation, for 21 occasion, at the U.N. General Assembly on November 13, to demand an end to that hostile policy.
The extraterritorial nature of the blockade was intensified during the administration of President Barack Obama, by prosecuting and sanctioning institutions and companies that have tried to trade with the Caribbean nation, he stressed.
Gonzalez Lerner explained that in over 50 years, the economic damage caused by that policy of harassment against Cuba totaled $1.066 trillion dollars, considering the depreciation of that foreign currency against the value of gold in the international market.
The top Cuban representative in Portugal recalled that in 2011, only the United States and Israel voted against the draft resolution at the United Nations, in contrast to 186 countries that condemned the Washington harassment.
He predicted that on November 13, when the resolution on the need to end this illegal measure will be subjected to a vote again, the Caribbean nation will be once again supported by most of the states represented in the global organization.
