The Salvadoran Parliament will confer El Salvador's Noble Friend Award on Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon today, on the occasion of his five-day visit to this country.
The legislature's decision was approved on November 15 in "recognition of his invaluable contributions in promoting dialogue, peace and regional integration, as well as for his outstanding contribution to the peace process of the Salvadoran state."
The Legislative Assembly issued a statement saying that Alarcon "made a leading contribution to the peace process in El Salvador, especially during negotiation rounds accompanied by the U.N."
It recalled that Alarcon was Cuba's permanent representative at the United Nations, Vice President of the General Assembly for the world governing body, and President of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Development Program.
The granting of the award was sponsored by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, and approved by a majority in the plenary session held on November 15.
The president of the Cuban parliament arrived in San Salvador on Monday, in response to an invitation from the Legislative Assembly. He has a busy schedule pending as of Tuesday.
