Dominican organizations demand Obama to release the Five
At least ten youth and leftist Dominican organizations sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the five Cubans antiterrorist fighters held in US prisons since 1998.

At least ten youth and leftist Dominican organizations sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the five Cubans antiterrorist fighters held in US prisons since 1998.
The solidarity groups joined the international campaign demanding justice for Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who were sentenced following an unfair trial to prison terms ranging from 15 years to life.
The letters sent by the Dominican activists said the Five did not break any laws during their monitoring of extremist groups threatening violent actions against Cuba, also highlighting the political grounds of their imprisonment.
They also requested the US head of state to allow René González, who was recently released under probation, to return to Cuba.
Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzales, known internationally as the “Cuban Five” were jailed in September 1998 for reporting on violent schemes by far-right anti-Cuban groups based in Miami. They were then convicted in 2001 by a Florida court on alleged espionage charges. The Five were given excessively long sentences, put in separate jails in different parts of the country with periods of solitary confinement, and routinely denied visits by their family members, who are residing in Cuba.
