Students and professors from the University of Oriente are discussing today the significance of the attack on the Moncada Garrison, led by young revolutionaries and Fidel Castro, on July 26, 1953.
During the workshop "Moncada, Six Decades of Victories," developed by the College of Social Sciences at that institution, interesting features are emerging about the situation of that university on that date, as well as the mark it left on that historic event.
Veteran combatants attended the sessions, during which they spoke about the things that led up to the attack on the second most powerful military garrison in the country. Despite not achieving its objective, the action marked the beginning of the final stage in the Cuban insurrection.
Other issues discussed were those related to the influence of Jose Marti's ideas in the so-called generation of the century, for being the century of the birth of the Cuban hero, considered the intellectual forefather of heroic action.
Approaches to historical figures, who were involved in the attack and other decisive operations of the liberation struggle, were also discussed by teachers and students of history and other social sciences.
One month before the celebration here of the anniversary of the Moncada attack, activities include the placement of a plaque in the site where the July 26th Movement, a political force that led the struggle against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship until the victory in January 1959, was founded here in 1955.
