Cuban Student Leader Fallen in 1957 Honored
Students, authorities and settlers from the western Cuban city of Cardenas paid homage here today to Jose Antonio Echeverria, one of the most outstanding leaders of the Cuban students movement, who died in a confrontation with the police in 1957.

Students, authorities and settlers from the western Cuban city of Cardenas paid homage here today to Jose Antonio Echeverria, one of the most outstanding leaders of the Cuban students movement, who died in a confrontation with the police in 1957.
The traditional pilgrimage was made under a persistent drizzle accompanying pilgrims from the centrical museum at the native home of Jose Antonio up to the Cemetery of Cardenas.
Flower offerings with the name of Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro, President Raul Castro, other Cuban officials and ministers, and from the people of Cardenas, were placed at the grave of the deceased students leader.
The central words were pronounced by Lizet Mariet Fiallo, president of the University Students Federation in the western province of Matanzas.
Fifty-six years ago, Echeverria, together with other leaders and members of the Revolutionary Directory, decided to attack the Presidential Palace to eliminate then dictator Fulgencio Batista, and in a parallel action take a famous Cuban radio station called Radio Reloj to reveal the actions.
Echeverria (1932-1957) entered the University of Havana in the 1950-1951 course to study Architecture. He was elected president of the Association of Students of the Faculty of Architecture in September 1954, and became a member of the National University Students Federation (FEU) to be elected for president in 1955.
In that same year, he became a founder of the Revolutionary Directory and one of the planners of the action in which he lost his life on March 13, 1957.
