Representatives of the Cuban civil society and regional organizations based in Cuba approved here today a joint declaration on peace and nuclear disarmament, defending a fair, equitable world order.
In a meeting in the headquarters of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), participants expressed their concern about the danger that the existence of more than 20,000 nuclear weapons pose for humankind.
They also stressed that the total ban of those weapons is the only guarantee against their use, so they urged the governments to advance towards that objective.
"It is unacceptable that the world nowadays spends 1.74 millions USD in the production of weapons while 1,02 billion people suffer famine, and 11 million of children die from preventable diseases every year," says the declaration.
During the meeting, permanent professor of the Raul Roa Institute of Foreign Relations, Leyde Rodriguez, warned that the world is facing to great challenges: climate change and nuclear weapon proliferation.
In this regard, he said that disarmament is the system of measures whose implementation must lead to eliminate the threat of a world war.
In Rodriguez' opinion, curbing arms race remains an aspiration of mankind.
At least 25 organizations of the Cuban civil society were represented in the ACNU meeting, which was also attended by members of the World Economy Research Center and Foreign Ministry officials.
