Fernando González Llort, one of the five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unfairly held in the United States, was transferred to a prison in Arizona state, the International Free the Five Committee said today.
González Llort, along with Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and René González, known worldwide as The Cuban Five, were detained in 1998 for monitoring Florida-based terrorist groups operating against Cuba.
Fernando Gonzalez was given an unfair, harsh prison sentence and additional punishment in violation of the most basic human rights of prisoners and their families.
In December 2009, he was re-sentenced to 17 years in prison after an Appeal Court revised his case.
Before his transfer to Arizona, Gonzalez had been serving his sentence in Terre Haute federal prison, in Indiana.
Organizations of solidarity with Cuba worldwide are staging a strong campaign for the immediate release of The Cuban Five.
Gerardo, Ramon, Antonio and Fernando will have served 14 years in prison on September 14, and Rene is under supervised release, an additional punishment that prevents him from returning home to Cuba.
