Cuba Hosts 12th Worldwide Art Deco Congress
The 12th World Congress on Art Deco begins today in this capital with the participation of more than 250 specialists from different countries, eager to learn about the preservation of this artistic style on the island.

The 12th World Congress on Art Deco begins today in this capital with the participation of more than 250 specialists from different countries, eager to learn about the preservation of this artistic style on the island.
Starting today and throughout the week, Cuba will become the global center for Art Deco.
An attractive promotional spot was created by Cuban musician and filmmaker Alfonso X for the meeting, with an overview of emblematic Art Deco buildings in Havana, such as the Bacardi building in Old Havana and the building currently housing the Casa de las Americas in Vedado, where the event will open.
Leading figures from the design world such as the Canadian Sandra Cohen, president of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies, and the U.S. American Katty Asuman, in charge of the New York representation, will attend the Congress.
Art figures in Latin America dedicated to conservation, as well as architects, historians and designers from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba will also be present in the event, along with scholars from the United States, Canada, Spain, China, New Zealand, and Australia.
Today's agenda includes a session of master lectures, among them one devoted to the presence of this artistic expression in Puerto Rico, and the influence of Mexican muralists in Chicago, USA.
The launching of the book "La Habana Deco" (Havana Deco) by Alejandro Alonso, an approach to the conservation of that style of architecture in the historic district of Old Havana, is one of the featured events at the Congress.
In parallel, tours will be conducted of buildings in Havana and other provinces such as Cienfuegos (center), Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba (east), declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Exhibition of pieces along with screenings of films from the era, and others set in the 1930s and 1950s, are included in the artistic program.
Art Deco flourished worldwide in the early 20th century and influenced different facets of design, such as costume, jewelry, furniture, architecture, and graphic arts. All of these art forms are present in Cuba.
