The First Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) expressed today its rejection of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba.
In a special communiqué, the countries of the area expressed their "strongest rejection of coercive, unilateral measures applied for political reasons against sovereign countries, affecting the peoplesâ�Ö wellbeing," says the text.
The document says such measures are designed to prevent nations from exercising their right to choose, of their own free will, their political, economic and social systems.
The heads of State and Government of CELAC member countries reaffirmed their strongest condemnation of the application of laws and measures in violation of international law like the Helms-Burton Act, including its extraterritorial effect, and urged the US government to put an end to its application.
Therefore, the communiqué asks Washington that, in compliance with successive resolutions approved by the UN General Assembly and in response to repeated calls from Latin America and the Caribbean, puts an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba.
