Belarusian students demanded today the U.S. government the release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the northern nation almost 15 years ago for fighting criminal actions against their country.
Artur Procopchik, representing the university students of the Faculty of International Relations at the Belarusian State University, read a statement in which the students expressed interest in disclosing here the truth about the Five, as they are known in the global campaign for their release.
They demanded the return to Cuba of Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, and called U.S. President Barack Obama to take the decision to release them, by strict justice and on humanitarian grounds, said. Those Belarussian students will travel to the island to study for a month at the "Raul Roa Garcia" Institute of International Relations in Havana, and were interested in learning about the case of those Cubans condemned to severe sentences in the United States.
The president of the Committee to Free the Cuban Five in Belarus, Guenady Ladisev, retold about the rigged trial to which the Cuban fighters were submitted, and insisted in the importance of the global solidarity.
Ladisev explained that Ramon, Antonio, Fernando, Gerardo and Rene were detained in 1998, for preventing terrorist groups based in southern Florida, U.S.A., conducting sabotage and other vandalistic actions against Cuba.
Gerardo was condemned to two life sentences plus 15 years in prison, while Rene Gonzalez is obliged to stay another three years on U.S. territory under supervised release.
