WHO/PAHO Representative in Bolivia Recognizes Cuban Doctors

The representative of the World Health Organization and Pan-American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) in Bolivia, Luis Fernando Leanes, tofay acknowledged the role Cuban doctors have played in Latin America and Africa - particularly in fighting Ebola virus.
In an interview with Prensa Latina, Leanes stated that in response to the epidemic in West Africa the WHO is putting in place a series of reforms, which will include a rapid response force (such as Cuba has) to face medical emergencies.

In 2014, the Caribbean nation was the first to respond to the call by WHO and the UN to deal with the Ebola virus.

They sent 256 members of the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade (a Cuban medical emergence response group) to Africa.

WHO recognized both the work Cuba has carried out fighting Ebola virus in West Africa and the work they have been doing for several years in Latin America, said Leanes.

He stated that the work of Cuban physicians in Bolivia had a special dimension to it because it complemented the "Mi Salud" program, which is aimed at providing free assistance and strengthening rural clinics in the country.

The official also referred to the recent WHO alert regarding the Zika virus, associated with microcephaly and cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
