President of Cuba recalled 65th anniversary of the General Strike

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel paid tribute today to the martyrs who fell in the revolutionary General Strike, carried out 65 years ago with the aim of overthrowing the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

Through his Twitter account, the head of state pointed out that the participants in the action “did not fall in vain in those bloody hours of April.”

The president recalled on the social network that the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, considered the strike “the hardest blow that the Revolution suffered throughout its entire journey; a blow from which our people knew how to recover.”

Convened by the July 26 Movement and led mostly by young and humble workers, the strike had its greatest exponents in Havana and Villa Clara (center).

In various cities of the country, more than 100 fighters lost their lives on April 9 and 10, 1958 due to the brutal repression of the Batista dictatorship.

According to historical records, despite the fact that the action did not achieve the expected success, its example left valuable experiences for the revolutionary movement.
