Chavez Labels Cuban Doctors as Heroes
President Hugo Chavez described as heroes the Cuban doctors supporting the efforts of the Venezuelan government to give free medical attention of high quality.
"They are heroes and heroines who are here with us giving their all for the Venezuelan people's life and health", affirmed the president in Lara state during a mass demonstration.
Chavez said that continuity of that help depends on keeping the socialist majority in the National Assembly after the September 26 legislative elections.
The thousands of Cuban doctors could not continue here if the opposition wins the Assembly because they will hinder it, he warned on Saturday night at the western territory where he came along with the candidates in Lara for the Venezuela United Socialist Party.
Chavez stated that all the other social victories of the revolution that started in 1999 will be at risk with an opposition majority in parliament.
He called on the popular sectors to obtain an overwhelming victory in the ballot boxes with at least two thirds of the 165 seats being contested.
The Cuban-Venezuelan medical collaboration has already provided dozens of millions of free medical consultations since 2003 thanks to a network of medical offices, hospitals and specialized centres spread all over the country.
